Seventy-five years of the reconstruction of the Somnath temple are being marked today in Gujarat’s Somnath. The newly rebuilt Somnath temple was consecrated in independent India on 11 May 1951. To celebrate this major moment in history, the Somnath Amrit Mahotsav is being organised.

PM Modi has reached Somnath, where a 2km-long roadshow from the helipad to the temple has also begun. After this, Modi will visit the Somnath temple, where the ritual of anointing the temple spire will be held for the first time.

Amid Vedic chants, the temple spire will undergo Kumbhabhishek with water brought from 11 pilgrimage sites. A 90-metre-high crane will be used to perform the ritual with holy water from the ceremonial pot.

After the ritual, the Indian Air Force’s Surya Kiran team will perform a 15-minute aerobatic show above the temple. Flowers will also be showered over the temple using Chetak helicopters.
