PM Modi calls Union ministers’ meet on 21 May:Cabinet reshuffle, savings measures on agenda

The Modi government’s cabinet meeting is likely to be held on May 21. All central ministers, ministers of state with independent charge, and other ministers of state are expected to attend this meeting to be chaired by PM Modi.

Sources said the meeting is expected to review the functioning of ministries and departments, along with various aspects of government schemes and programmes.

Speculation has also intensified over a possible Cabinet reshuffle ahead of the Modi 3.0 government completing two years in office. The government was sworn in on 10 June 2024. According to sources, a Cabinet expansion and reshuffle may take place in the second week of June.

The Prime Minister may also discuss his recent appeal for savings during the meeting. In rallies held on 10 and 11 May, he urged people to conserve fuel and avoid purchasing gold.

  • Where possible, reduce the use of petrol and diesel and use metro, electric buses and public transport.
  • I would ask Indians living abroad to bring at least five foreign guests to visit India.
  • A lot of the country’s money also goes abroad on gold imports. Until the situation normalizes, let us postpone buying gold. There is no need for gold.
  • If people use less cooking oil, it will benefit both the country and the city.

10 May: PM urged people in Hyderabad to postpone foreign travel

  • In the national interest, people should avoid buying and donating gold for one year.
  • Reduce unnecessary vehicle usage, travel by metro and do car pooling. Take as many people as possible with you.
  • The country should aim to halve the consumption of chemical fertilizers and rapidly move towards natural farming.
  • Postponing foreign travel for weddings, holidays and other reasons for some time will be in the national interest.

10 June 2024: First Cabinet Meeting

The first Cabinet meeting was held a day after the Modi government was sworn in.

Key decisions: Approval for the construction of 3 crore new houses under the Pradhan Mantri Awas Yojana (PMAY), a review of schemes for farmers, and discussions on the government’s initial 100-day agenda.

July 2024: Cabinet Meetings Ahead of the Union Budget

Several meetings were held ahead of the Monsoon Session of Parliament and the Union Budget.

Key issues discussed: Budget proposals, infrastructure investment, employment generation, rural welfare schemes, and coordination with states.

27 July 2024: NITI Aayog Governing Council Meeting

The meeting, chaired by Prime Minister Narendra Modi, was attended by Chief Ministers from across the country.

Focus areas: Viksit Bharat 2047, state development strategies, agriculture, healthcare, and digital governance.

August–December 2024: Multiple Cabinet Meetings

Several Cabinet meetings were chaired by the Prime Minister during this period.

Major decisions: Approval of railway and highway projects, defence procurement proposals, schemes for farmers and economically weaker sections, initiatives under Digital India and the AI Mission, and new education and skill development programmes.

Main agenda: Strategy for Lok Sabha and Rajya Sabha sessions, economic reforms, energy security, assessment of the impact of the West Asia crisis, and measures to control government expenditure.
