A man allegedly slapped a police constable and grabbed his neck during a Teja Dashmi procession in Ratlam’s Shivgarh on Monday. The incident took place after police found a knife on the man’s friend during a search.
Police detained the man carrying the knife for questioning when his friend allegedly slapped constable Kanwar Lal in the middle of the crowd. The constable then tried to restrain him and slapped him several times.
The man allegedly grabbed the constable by the neck while resisting arrest. The incident was recorded on video, which surfaced late on Monday night.
The man who allegedly assaulted the constable was released without action after apologising at the police station.
Police try to control crowd during procession
A large crowd had gathered in Shivgarh for the Teja Dashmi procession on Monday. Police personnel from Shivgarh police station were deployed for security.
During a search of a group of youths, police found a knife on one of them. Constables Kanwar Lal and Nitesh Jatav detained the man and began questioning him.
At this point, another man allegedly slapped Constable Kanwar Lal. The constable tried to detain him and slapped him several times. The man then allegedly grabbed the constable by the neck.
Kanwar Lal also grabbed the man by his hair and restrained him.
After slapping him, the young man grabbed the constable by the throat.
Police personnel forcibly dispersed the crowd and caught the young man.
Police personnel seated the young man on a motorcycle and began taking him to the police station.
Police take man to station
As the situation became heated, constable Nitesh Jatav ordered the crowd to move back, warning them against assaulting police personnel.
Police tried to put the man on a motorcycle, but he allegedly resisted and continued arguing with the officers. Constable Kanwar Lal eventually lifted him and seated him between two officers on the motorcycle before taking him to the police station.
No action was taken against the man who allegedly slapped the constable after he apologised at the police station. However, police took action against the man who was found carrying the knife.
‘He apologised at the police station’
Shivgarh police station in-charge RS Makwana said a knife was recovered from a youth during checking at the procession.
He said a crowd gathered while the constable was questioning the youth. When police asked people to move away, an argument broke out and the youth’s friend allegedly assaulted a police officer.
Makwana said the man was taken to the police station, where he apologised, following which no action was taken against him. Action was taken against the youth from whom the knife was recovered.
According to police, all those involved are residents of Patdi village in the Sarwan area.
