Field verification of the details of VIP voters who received notices during the ongoing Special Intensive Revision (SIR) process in Delhi has been completed. According to election officials, following the verification, their names have been secured for inclusion in the final electoral roll.
Those who received notices included BJP leader Lal Krishna Advani, former Vice-President Jagdeep Dhankhar, External Affairs Minister S. Jaishankar, Election Commissioner S.S. Sandhu, Delhi Chief Minister Rekha Gupta and former Chief Minister Arvind Kejriwal, among several other prominent figures.
Most of them were issued notices because their names did not match those in the previous 2002 SIR list, making them ‘unmapped’. A large number of them are voters in the New Delhi Assembly constituency.
According to election officials, notices have been sent to 33.13 lakh voters because of discrepancies in the information provided in their enumeration forms. The claims and objections phase of the SIR will continue until 30 September, and the final electoral roll will be published on 4 November.
Irregularities found in the forms of more than 33 lakh voters
98-year-old Lal Krishna Advani, his daughter Pratibha and daughter-in-law Geetika received notices because their names could not be mapped to the 2002 SIR electoral roll. The mapping process for his son Jayant has been completed. All four are voters in the New Delhi Assembly constituency.
External Affairs Minister S. Jaishankar and his wife Kyoko Jaishankar, who are voters in the Sunheri Bagh area of the New Delhi Assembly constituency, also received notices citing the reason, “not mapped from the previous SIR”.
Former Vice-President Jagdeep Dhankhar and his wife Sudesh were also issued notices. The address recorded in their voter records was that of the Vice-President’s residence.
Election Commissioner S.S. Sandhu was served a notice over a discrepancy in his name, while his son Damanbir was issued a notice over discrepancies in his parents’ names. Both are voters in the Delhi Cantonment Assembly constituency.
Third phase of SIR in 16 states, including Delhi and Maharashtra
The Election Commission announced the Special Intensive Revision (SIR) on 14 May in 16 states and 3 Union territories, including Haryana, Jharkhand, Uttarakhand, Delhi and Maharashtra. This is the third phase of the SIR.
The entire process will run from 30 May to 23 December. During this period, 36.73 crore voters are being verified. The states where the SIR will be conducted include Punjab, Uttarakhand and Manipur, which are due to hold Assembly elections next year. Elections will be held in the other 13 states in 2028 and 2029.
Nagaland: 11.99 lakh names in draft electoral roll after SIR, 1.59 lakh removed
The draft electoral roll was released in Nagaland on Sunday after the Special Intensive Revision (SIR). Around 1.59 lakh names from the pre-SIR electoral roll, which had 13.57 lakh voters, were not included.
The new draft list contains the names of 11.99 lakh voters. During the SIR, 29,944 voters in the previous list were found to be dead, 1.23 lakh were absent or had permanently relocated, and 5,059 voters were registered in more than one place.
