A look at the glorious history of Cannes-
Cannes started against Hitler’s dictatorship
The Venice Film Festival was started in 1938, but at that time, Germany’s dictator Adolf Hitler and Italy’s dictator Mussolini used to distribute awards to their favorite people. Annoyed by their dictatorship, many jury members left the Venice Film Festival and decided to start a free festival, the location of which was decided as Cannes, Paris.
The French government signed its documents and declared it the official Cannes Film Festival. The first film festival was scheduled to take place from September 1-20, 1939. A gala night was held a day before, but when the festival began on September 1, Hitler’s attack on Poland caused an uproar at the ceremony, and the ceremony had to be postponed for 10 days.
Instead of improving, the situation worsened when war was declared between France and the United Kingdom. Due to the Second World War, the Cannes Film Festival was postponed for 6 years.
After a 6-year wait due to World War 2, the first ceremony took place from September 20 – October 5, 1946, in which 20 countries participated. In 1947, due to poor management, only 16 countries participated.

The following year, in 1948, the ceremony did not take place due to budget constraints. In 1949, people were again disappointed with event management. In 1950, the film festival did not happen again as they could not afford the expenses. From 1951 until now, the ceremony was only canceled in 2020 due to the COVID-19 pandemic.

It is crafted from 18-carat yellow gold and emerald-cut diamonds. The cost of this single award is 27 thousand dollars, which is ₹18 lakh.
