Bollywood is currently leaning heavily towards sequels and franchise films, with filmmakers bringing back some of the industry’s most loved movies.
From comedy entertainers to thriller dramas and action films, several blockbuster franchises are now getting new installments after years of fan demand.
While some projects are already in production, others are still facing delays due to scripting and legal issues.
‘3 Idiots 2’ Officially in Development
One of the biggest sequel announcements recently came from Aamir Khan, who confirmed that ‘3 Idiots 2’ is officially in the works.
Director Rajkumar Hirani and writer Abhijat Joshi are currently working on the script. Reports suggest the story may continue almost 10 years after the original film. There is also buzz that Vicky Kaushal could join the franchise in a major role. However, the release date has not been announced yet.
‘Welcome to the Jungle’ Set for 2026 Release
Akshay Kumar’s ‘Welcome to the Jungle’ is one of the most-awaited comedy sequels currently under production.
The film is the third installment in the ‘Welcome’ franchise and features a huge ensemble cast. Reports say the makers recently shot important scenes in Dubai, including Suniel Shetty’s introduction sequence. The movie is expected to release on June 26, 2026.
‘Golmaal 5’ Shoot Begins
Director Rohit Shetty has officially started work on ‘Golmaal 5’. The film will reportedly bring back familiar faces like Ajay Devgn, Arshad Warsi, Tusshar Kapoor, and Shreyas Talpade. Reports also suggest Akshay Kumar may join the comedy franchise.
Shooting has already started in Ooty, but the makers have not revealed the release date yet.
‘Drishyam 3’ Moving Ahead
After the success of the first two films, ‘Drishyam 3’ is also moving forward. Ajay Devgn will return as Vijay Salgaonkar once again.
However, reports claim Akshaye Khanna may not return for the third installment. Actor Prakash Raj is reportedly being considered for an important role. Ajay Devgn’s Drishyam 3 will officially release in theatres on Oct 2.
‘Hera Pheri 3’ Still Facing Delays
Despite huge fan excitement, ‘Hera Pheri 3’ remains stuck due to legal and production-related issues. Fans have been eagerly waiting to see Akshay Kumar, Suniel Shetty, and Paresh Rawal reunite on screen.
Director Priyadarshan recently hinted that the project may take longer before officially beginning production. The release date is still uncertain.
‘Tumbbad 2’ Officially in Development
After the re-release success of ‘Tumbbad’, the makers have officially confirmed ‘Tumbbad 2’. Actor Sohum Shah recently revealed that work on the sequel has already started, and the story will take the dark fantasy world forward with a bigger scale and deeper mythology.
The first film gained cult status over the years for its unique storytelling and horror elements, making the sequel one of the most anticipated projects among fans. While the release date has not been announced yet, reports suggest the film is currently in the early stages of production.
Other Big Sequels in Development
Apart from these films, several other sequels are also creating excitement. ‘War 2’ starring Hrithik Roshan and N. T. Rama Rao Jr. is scheduled to release on August 14, 2026. ‘Housefull 5’ is expected to hit theatres on June 6, 2025, while ‘Don 3’ starring Ranveer Singh is currently in development. ‘Krrish 4’ and ‘Bhool Bhulaiyaa 4’ are also being discussed, though official release dates have not been announced yet.
